Nuva Ring - Advantages and Disadvantages

HOW ARE NUVARINGS USED FOR CONTRACEPTION?

One NuvaRing is placed in the vagina in the vicinity of the cervix and is worn for three weeks. It is then removed. The fourth week is ring-free to permit withdrawal bleeding. The delicate two-inch in diameter ring delivers both an estrogen and progestin and this stops ovulation.

WHAT IS THE SUCCESS RATE OF THE RING?

Used correctly and consistently the ring leads to only 3 pregnancies among 1,000 women using the ring for one year! You do not need a back-up method during the seven ring-free days. Complete information about this method is available through your clinician and through the NuvaRing package insert. It often helps to have your clinician show you how to insert and remove a ring.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES?

  • You don't have to take a pill daily or interrupt sex to use a barrier contraceptive.
  • Rings decrease a woman's menstrual cramps and pain.
  • Rings decrease the amount of menstrual bleeding and a woman's risk for anemia.
  • Acne may improve and facial hair is diminished.
  • Many women enjoy sex more when using NuvaRings.
  • You can use rings for an extended period of time or continuously (with no hormone-free intervals).
  • Each ring has enough hormones to suppress ovulation for up to 35 days, so you can be a number of days late putting in a new ring.
  • The dose of estrogen is lower in the case of the NuvaRing than it is for the two other combined hormonal contraceptives, the pill and the patch.

WHAT ARE THE DISADVANTAGES?

  • Rings do not protect you from HIV or other infections. Use condoms if you may be at risk.
  • You may have spotting (mostly during the first few cycles using rings).
  • Using NuvaRings may cause headaches, depression, mood changes, or decreased enjoyment of sex (infrequent).
  • Serious complications such as blood clots may occur but are rare.
  • Rings cost about $ 40.00 per month or $400.00 per year.
  • A back-up contraceptive for seven days is recommended if there is any question about starting the use of a new ring.

I wanted to know how long has the Ring been out in the market and is it safe I used to use the Patch and now I am afraid that I have a blood clot some where. Has anyone died from using the Nuva Ring

The Nuva Ring is really pretty new - approved by the FDA in 2001. There have been no reported serious consequences from users. While this is good news, I would qualify this by suggesting that the Ring should also be subjected to a longer term study of the effect of continuous release of Estrogen. Like the Patch, the ring delivers continuous estrogen, whereas the pill is cyclic - the hormones are gone from your system in 20-22 hours. There may by unrealized consequences of this continuous delivery - even though the Ring delivers significantly less Estrogen than the Patch.

Does the Nuva Ring have any effects of gaining weight?

Moderator: The side effects experienced by every woman vary, but every form of hormonal birth control has shown an effect of weight gain in many women. Each brand and type differs in it's effect, some more than others, but it is safe to say that the chances are you will gain weight.

This is an excellent product and gives me great peace of mind knowing I'm using one of the lowest doses of hormone available. Also, under my doctor's supervision I change the Nuva Ring every 4 weeks without the one week bread, thus I do not have to go through menstrual cycles anymore! Praise god!

My 18 year old daughter recently was in intensive care with a blook clot in her sub clavian vein from the nuva ring. She was found to have no other risk factors. I would strongly urge women NOT to use this form of birth control When I called to report it the company refused to give me statistics on numbers of incident reports like this.

I would like to know if it is difficult to removed the ring And also, if the ring interfere with penetration.

Moderator: The Nuva Ring has been found to be very simple to learn to place and remove. Your doctor should work with you the first time you try it to verify for you that it is correctly placed. A small number of couples find the ring interferes with the comfort of sex, and some others have experienced incidents of yeast and other vaginal complaints.

I am 29 and was on the ring for one cycle before I began passing out and experiencing all types of symptoms from headaches to joint pain. I was hospitalized and am still not okay after 3 months. Please don't use this product. There is not much information about it and the doctors don't know enough to help you get through the awful side effects. My life will never be the same.

Our family has had no history of cancer at all. I began using nuva ring in October of 2003, and it caused me a lot of abdominal pain and discomfort. In January of 2004, I stopped using the ring due to the pain. In July of 2004, I was diagnosed with cervical cancer that was highly invasive. I would not suggest using the ring.

I have heard plenty of horror stories about women (friends of mine) who went on hormonal birth control - the pill, the patch, the shot or the ring. It seems to me the risk of having low-dose hormones in a localized area, rather than taking a pill/patch/shot and having them in your whole system, is a lot 'safer.' There are awful potential side effects and scary stories about any medical treatment you can get. Its a risk you have to weigh. I've been using the Ring for a year, and it's worth the risk.

How far can you put the ring in Can you put it in until you can't put it in any farther?

Moderator: Yes, you want to have it securely placed so it doesn't dislodge during intercourse. You did receive a practice session with your OBGYN didn't you?

I used NuvaRing for about one year. At first I really liked it but within the last four months I have been getting horrible headaches 2-3 days after removal of the ring. I went to my doctor today and she told me she no longer wants me to use it. Headaches are a side effect of the ring, however with prolonged use they are suppossed to stop. Since I did not have them in the begining, and they have been getting worse, this was her reason for me to stop use of Nuva Ring. I am now in the process of looking for an alternative birth control.

my dr. has reccommended the nuva ring, stating that it has the least amount of side effects of the forms of the pill, ect. Is this true She claims that the weight gain, mood swings and ect., listed side effects are so rare that they are virtually non existent. Is this true

Moderator: Possibly true, indications so far are very good, however this is the very newest form of popular birth control. We should keep in mind that there hasn't been as much research yet on this type of contraception, and our lessons from the Ortho-Evra patch indicate we shouldn't just assume that research from the Pill can be generalized to include the Ring. The types of complications not yet fully evaluated are abrasions, infections and other irritations, and of course the possibly increased risk of secondary infections from STDs from vaginal irritation. This is a recent finding concerning the use of Nonoxynol 9, irritation to vaginal tissues increased the possibility of becoming infected with HIV.

I have been on Nuva Ring for 4 months. I changed over to the ring for the advantages of lower hormones and once a month dose. Before the Ring, I was on the Ortho Evra patch for over 2 years, but went off 6 months ago after the reports of high instances of blood clots. Before that I had been on the pill for close to 8 years. I never had any real problems with the pill or patch, but wanted a lower dose of hormones in my body and the convenience of the Nuva Ring. After starting the ring, I noticed some tenderness and light pain in my left side during part of the times it was in. I figured I would give it a few more months, but did not have the chance. Instead, I ended up with a DVT (Blood Clot) in my upper left thigh. I am a very healthy, fit 28 year old with no other risk factors. I have now removed the Nuva Ring and been told that I should no longer use prescription birth control. It does seem that more testing needs to be done on the Nuva Ring and the risk of blood clots.

I've been on the Nuva Ring for a short time now and I don't have any complaints. Anyone know what effect smoking has on the effectiveness of it Or does it increase the incidence of blood clots Just curious...

Moderator: Smoking has been shown to double the risks of blood clots, heart attack and stroke in user of hormonal contraceptives. Effectiveness is not impaired, in fact severe illness and death would certainly decrease your chances of becoming pregnant. Sorry to be glib, but smoking and hormonal contraceptives are just too risky together.
