News: South Dakota may Criminalize Abortion
|
March 5th, 2006. A controversial bill (HB 1215) that would criminalize all abortions except those to save a woman's life is now in the hands of the Governor of South Dakota, with only 10 days remaining to make his decsion, he has in the past indicated support of such a bill. Kate Looby, director of Planned Parenthood of Minnesota/North Dakota/South Dakota, has said the group plans to challenge the measure in court if it is approved. By eliminating abortions in the case of incest, sexual assault or to protect the health of the pregnant woman, South Dakota would become the first state to make the step towards the overturn of the Roe vs Wade decision. The Mexican government approved Plan B, the Emergency Contraceptive Pill, for sale OTC last year. This week pharmacists began offering the pill, widely known as the "Morning After Pill" without prescription. Just over the US border pharmacies are now offering contraception that would require a prescription only feet away.

A recent study indicates that self-injection of a monthly contraceptive at home appears to be preferable to office administration. Nancy Stanwood from the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York, USA, said the study "demonstrates the feasibility of teaching women self-injection."
